Teyana Taylor: The Petunia We Love

The Petunia who bloomed into our lives on an episode of My Super Sweet 16, has long become a staple of hip hop culture - if not yet pop culture in general. Here’s why we fell in love with Teyana Taylor from the beginning.

More Than a Triple Threat

Teyana Taylor is a singer, rapper, writer, dancer, model, and actor. Teyana Taylor was signed to Pharrell Williams Star Trak/Interscope records, and in 2008 released her single “Google Me”. A year later she released a mixtape, From a Planet Called Harlem. Teyana also helped popularize the Chicken Noodle Soup dance, she even aided in choreographing Beyoncé’s “Ring The Alarm” video.  Teyana has writing credits for artists such as Chris Brown. Her vocals have also been featured on many well-known artists music, such as Kanye West. After mutually agreeing to leave Star Trak/Interscope records, Teyana Taylor signed to Kanye West’s Def Jam-affiliated, G.O.O.D Music. In 2014, Teyana released a proper debut album, VII. As an actor Teyana has racked up some screen credits, Stomp The Yard 2: Homecoming, Madea’s Big Happy Family, Honey: Rose Up and Dance, and The Breaks. Appearing in Kanye West’s “Fade” music video, Teyana became a mainstream success “IT girl”. Teyana, and husband Iman Shumpert with their daughter, Iman Tayla Shumpert, Jr. (aka Junie), also just wrapped season 1 of their reality series on VH1. Teyana has also ripped the runway for New York Fashion Week.

Teyana Taylor seems to be able to do it all, while still being a mother and wife. She is a true business woman and has so much more left to do in her career. Teyana Taylor’s sophomore album, coined with the hashtag on social media, #KTSE is scheduled to release everywhere on June 22.
