The Icon: My Role Model, Oprah, Receives Cecil B. de Mille Award at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards

“All my life I had to fight ...” — A line that has stuck with me since the first time I watched The Color Purple in the den of my late grandmother’s Arkansas home. Of course, I had watched the widely popular daytime talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show, it was my grandmother’s favorite. I remember sitting there wondering how does she do this? How does she get to be herself and help people? How does she get to talk about whatever she wants to whoever she wants? It was a mystery of magical proportions to me. What made the experience more magical was my concept of time took a while to happen so I never actually knew the time The Oprah Winfrey show came on each weekday. I had developed an internal clock, in the summer time I would know right after nap time — which was right after lunch — The Oprah Winfrey Show would be on. During the school year, I knew it would already be on before I got out of school I would always be able to catch the end portion of it — if I sped home from the bus stop.

Oprah was the actual loving goodness I believed the world truly was despite all the hurtful things in it. She was genuine and pure, each and every time she graced the TV screen. Soon she would grace the big screen in more widely known films and behind the scenes as a producer. Such films include, Charlotte’s WebThe Great DebatersThe ButlerSelmaThe Princess and The FrogBee MovieOur Friend, Martin, and so much more.

After 25 years, and 23 seasons The Oprah Winfrey Show ended but as quick as the sadness entered my heart it was replaced with joy at the announcement of Oprah getting her own television network, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). Oprah had her own talk show, magazine (O, The Oprah Magazine), and now her own television network.

She was the epitome of what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, provide community service through mass media. Use my talents and skills to speak my truth so that it may help others. Oprah is the reason I am in college and why I wanted to be a content creator, why I ran through like 5 YouTube channels before finally taking a leap of faith my freshman year of college and just doing it. Oprah is why I love to read and write, why I like to interview people. Oprah is my role model, and her achievements and presence was so needed to see a black woman achieve so much in a world that is traditionally against her. That is what it meant for Oprah to win the Cecil B. de Mille Award last night at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards.
