Meet 'KiKi': Kiana Ledé releases debut album: Review

Kiana Ledé’s multifaceted experiences inspire a solid debut album.

Kiana Ledé has a resume that speaks for itself. If you can't recall her name you've most likely heard her music or seen her acting on TV series. Born and raised in the outskirts of Phoenix, Ledé spent her teenage years focusing on music. According to her Republic Records artist biography page, "Alone in her room with nothing but a keyboard, her voice, and a mixture of records old and new, Ledé harnessed her time to tap into the rich musical history of her diverse family heritage — [Black, Native American and Latino]." In 2020, the singer/actress is ready to deliver her official debut album "KiKi" on her birthday, April 3.

Ledé got her start by winning Kidz Bop's Kidz Star USA competition in 2011 and signed to major-label RCA. The following year at the age of 14, she debuted her first record, "Do the Mermaid" for "Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 2." Her first official single from RCA was "Hey Chica," which was featured on the "Smurfs 2" soundtrack.

For some time, Kiana was more visible as an actor than a singer. Most notably for her role on MTV's "Scream" series as Zoe Vaughn. Ledé also starred in the Netflix comedy "All About the Washingtons" with Rev Run and his wife, Justine Simmons.

She soon signed to Orange Factory Music and began doing covers on YouTube with her #SoulFoodTuesday (#SoulFoodSessions). In 2015, "Soulfood Sessions" EP was released featuring four of her most popular covers. In 2017, she consistently released singles such as "I Choose You" and "FairPlay" through the UMG-distributed Republic.

Since then, Ledé has been touring and creating more buzz from the success of her 2018 EP "Selfless" and 2019 EP "Myself." Each of these moments has led to a solid production of a debut album filled with new takes on romance, and self-love. The debut album features 17 tracks for fans to get to know the real KiKi (Kiana's nickname). The lead single "Mad At Me." samples the classic Outkast record, "So Fresh, So Clean," and was released on Jan. 24. The second single "Forfeit." released on March 13 features Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, Lucky Daye. "KiKi" boasts other features from artists such as Ari Lennox, 6LACK, Moneybagg Yo, Bia, Col3trane, and Arin Ray.

"KiKi" opens with "Cancelled.," a record Ledé opened up about, during her Billboard Live At-Home session on March 24., She partnered with Billboard to raise money for the Downtown Women's Center in Los Angeles.

"Literally, all of these songs are so close to my heart, but I would say" Cancelled." is one that means the most to me," she said. "'Cause I wrote it about a friend, and her getting f--ked over by the same dude over and over again. And I just really love my friends, and I love women, which is why I chose [the] Downtown Women's Center. I just always want to protect women, especially friends. So yeah, I would say 'Cancelled.' You'll hear why when it comes out," said Ledé during her Billboard Live At-Home session.

After hearing the opening track, listeners can definitely understand why it means so much to the singer. The start of the song samples a video from TikTok user Jasmine Orlando leading into catchy punchline verses as Ledé glides over the beat produced by Roark Bailey, Derrick Milano, and Rice N' Peas. Diving in deeper with the soulful "Chocolate." featuring Ari Lennox, listeners will get a different vibe than the aforementioned "Cancelled." In this record, Ledé and Lennox show appreciation to their respective partners. "Compliments to your mother, know how to treat a good woman ... You changed up the weather, makin' everything better," sings Ledé. The record is soon to rack up streams, and radio spins with Ledé and Lennox vocalizing the chorus, "So chocolate, craving it. So amazing like it ain't real, mmm ..."

Ledé breaks down brick walls letting fans in with "Crazy." and "Plenty More." These songs are perfectly placed on the album, telling a story of love and hurt that can make you "crazy." In "Crazy." Ledé has a gut feeling her partner is unfaithful and wants to retaliate.

"I' ma slash your tires and your car. Already got the windows, I ain't even say I'm sorry. How the fuck you get me to this point ...," sings Ledé.

"Plenty More." is more melancholy as Ledé fully realizes all the pain her partner's actions caused her. She battles with getting even or just leaving.

The 22-year-old songstress kicks up the tempo with "Labels." featuring Moneybagg Yo & Bia. The track interpolates "Juicy Fruit" by Mtume, the iconic track sampled by The Notorious B.I.G. in "Juicy."

Other stand out tracks include "Feel a Way.," "Attention.," and "Protection."

Taking center stage to close out Led é's debut is the stripped-down ballad "No Takebacks." Her vocal range and capability shine throughout the album, but the final track is — special.

Kiana Ledé opens up in a way that I didn't think was possible because she has been transparent in her music, but "KiKi" feels like the world is officially meeting Kiana Ledé Brown — a layered 22-year-old from Arizona.

"KiKi" is available now everywhere.
