Must See TV: Being Mary Jane

Television is a past time that I've loved since I could remember and I love a binge worthy show, Being Mary Jane is definitely that.

Being Mary Jane is a series that started with a TV movie in 2013. The TV movie was such a success that BET ordered for the 1st season of the series. In 2014 the pilot episode premiered and I've been hooked since. Being Mary Jane follows the life of Mary Jane Paul (Gabrielle Union), a successful cable news anchor who has a designer clothes and shoes, a beautiful home, a nice car, and the drive to achieve anything she puts her mind to. But material things don't measure real happiness. Mary Jane longs to start a family of her own, but continues get in her own way. She navigates through life and learns about who she is meant to be. Accepting her flaws and mistakes as apart of the big beautiful picture we call life. Whether if those mistakes are falling in love and learning the man is married or personally ruining every good relationship because of fear.

Mary Jane is real and definitely far from perfect which makes her relatable to viewers. Gabrielle Union's delivery of the role makes you feel connected to Mary Jane like she is a long time friend. I connect with her personally because she has career in Mass Communications which is my major in college. Plus I understand how it feels to have the weight of the world on your shoulders and take one step forward and two steps back.

Being Mary Jane is the type of show that makes you feel good but will piss you off when Mary Jane ruins a good thing for herself. You will either roll your eyes or yell at the TV. I'm usually the latter. But nonetheless Being Mary Jane is highly entertaining and has a great plot.  Being Mary Jane just recently returned to BET with the second half of season 4 on Tuesday, July 18. You can catch up on Being Mary Jane season 1-3 as well as the first half of season 4 on Netflix.

Being Mary Jane is this week's must see TV series, check it out on BET Tuesdays at 10/9c.
